UJ celebrates winners of the 2024 Three Minute Thesis Competition

The University of Johannesburg’s Postgraduate School is proud to announce the winners of the 2024 Institutional Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) Competition, a prestigious challenge originally developed by the University of Queensland in 2008. This competition encourages doctoral candidates to distill the essence of their research into a compelling three-minute presentation, aimed at a non-specialist audience.

The 3MT competition offers an invaluable opportunity for students to sharpen their academic, presentation, and research communication skills. It also prepares them for explaining complex ideas to broader audiences. At UJ, students participated in face-to-face presentations, with the virtual final enabling them to gain additional experience in presenting to an international audience, receiving peer review, and honing skills for filmed presentations.

The Postgraduate School’s Research Capacity Development Unit would like to congratulate the following 2024 winners:

  1. Mosa Khasu (Faculty of Education) – First place
  2. Refilwe Chilo (Faculty of Science) – Second place
  3. Ntsako Mkhonto (Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment) – Third place
  4. Carike Verbooy (Faculty of Humanities) – People’s Choice Award

These students have demonstrated exceptional skill in communicating their research to a wider audience, showcasing UJ’s commitment to producing world-class research leaders.
