UJ celebrates resounding success in 2024 student registrations, kick starts orientation programmes

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) proudly announces the remarkable success of its 2024 student registration phase; UJ is on track to meet its enrolment plan, highlighting the effectiveness of its streamlined online registration system.

Impressive progress and smooth operations

Professor Bettine van Vuuren, UJ’s Registrar, commended the University’s commitment to excellence in education, emphasising the positive response from students during the registration period that commenced during the 3rd week of January 2024. Prof van Vuuren assured that the online registration system operates seamlessly and has gained widespread acceptance among students.

“The University’s streamlined online registration system is operating well and has garnered widespread student acceptance. The enthusiastic response from prospective students during the registration period, which kicked off on the 19th of January for first-time entering students and is slated to conclude on the 9th of February (subject to space availability), has exceeded expectations. The registration figures, which include both first-time entering and continuing students at undergrad and postgraduate levels, represent a vibrant and diverse student body, poised to embark on their academic journey at UJ,” said Prof van Vuuren. “UJ also registers a number of international students from more than 80 countries; these students lend an international flavour to our offerings and contribute to the UJ success story,” says Prof Ylva Rodny-Gumede, Senior Director: Internationalisation.

“We are delighted to witness such a positive response during this year’s registration period. The enrolment numbers underscore the University’s firm commitment to academic excellence and the delivery of high-quality education,” said Prof van Vuuren. She also noted that the University accommodated NSFAS-funded students with outstanding debts by allowing them to register and highlighted the necessity for NSFAS-funded students with non-NSFAS-related debts from previous years to complete an Acknowledgment of Debt (AOD) before proceeding with registration in 2024.

Orientation programmes for a smooth transition

Starting on the 5th of February, thousands of incoming first-year undergraduate students will engage in UJ’s orientation programmes, marking the beginning of their academic journey. Prof van Vuuren outlined the goal of introducing new students to the diverse array of academic services and support systems offered by the University, enhancing their overall student experience.

First-Year Seminar (FYS): A blended approach

“UJ’s orientation programme, known as the First Year Seminar (FYS), adopts a blended approach, combining face-to-face sessions and online self-paced modules to enrich the learning experience. FYS plays a pivotal role in integrating first-time incoming students into the university environment, acquainting them with UJ’s campuses and facilities. During FYS, students familiarise themselves with various academic development and support services, including the library, writing centres, computer facilities, counselling, and career development centres.”

Prof van Vuuren highlighted that the UJ First Year Experience programme includes seasoned third or fourth-year students providing guidance and support to first-year students in academics and residence living.

Looking forward to the 2024 academic year

As the registration period nears its close, Prof van Vuuren extended gratitude to all the students who have chosen to be part of the UJ community.

“The focus now shifts to the official start of the 2024 academic programme on Monday, 12 February, 2024. UJ is confident that its students are ready to embrace this opportunity, engaging in a dynamic and intellectually stimulating learning environment,” she said.
