Talent set to shine as preparations for UJ Sport Awards get underway

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) Sport Bureau is finalising preparations to host its prestigious flagship event, the annual UJ Sport Awards 2026, on Wednesday, 25 November 2026. The black-tie gala evening will celebrate the remarkable athletic and academic milestones achieved by the university’s student-athletes, coaches, and support staff across local, national and international circuits throughout the 2026 season.

Known as the home of the Orange Army, UJ has built a reputation as a powerhouse in South African tertiary sport. The annual showcase brings together top talent from a wide array of sporting codes, including Athletics, Football, Netball, Rugby, Hockey, Cricket, Rowing, Squash, and Basketball as well as Sports for Students with Disabilities. The UJ Sport Awards also recognise other nominee student-athletes who have excelled in sporting codes which do not fall under a UJ Sport club. These include, but not limited to, competing in sports such as table tennis, chess, and gymnastics, among others.

Key Accolades Up for Grabs

The 2026 ceremony will highlight extraordinary dedication across ten distinct categories. Among the evening’s primary honours are:

  • Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year: Awarded to elite athletes who delivered world-class performances on the national and global stage.
  • Student-Athlete of the Year: Honouring individuals who achieved dual excellence in academic performance and athletic competition.
  • Team of the Year and Club of the Year: Celebrating collective victories, sportsmanship, and outstanding campaign runs across Varsity Sport and University Sport South Africa (USSA) championships.
  • Age Group and Club Sportspersons of the Year: Recognizing emerging stars and dedicated club contributors.
  • Supporter of the Year: Celebrates the dedication of the most outstanding fan who travelled with teams to various competitions and stood out from the crowds.
  • Residence Team of the Year: Celebrates and honours the best performing sport team from a UJ student residence.

“The UJ Sport Awards offer a moment to honour the resilience, achievements and dedication of our student-athletes who embody the spirit of our institution’s values,” noted Ms. Nompilo Zondi, Senior Manager: Sport Clubs.

With nominations drawing from a year packed with Varsity Sport triumphs and USSA podium finishes, international success and academic performance, competition for the premier awards remains fierce. The event promises an unforgettable night of high fashion, entertainment, and sporting prestige.
