| UJ Alumni Dignitas Awards 2016
The University of Johannesburg (UJ) Alumni Office recognises the achievements and hard work of alumni who have made significant contributions to UJ in their respective field of study, profession, industry, community, region and nations at its Prestigious Annual Dignitas Awards Dinner and Ceremony. Since 2005, the UJ Alumni Dignitas Awards have celebrated the achievements of UJ alumni who have excelled in their respective fields through awarding symbolic trophies presented by the Vice Chancellor. This year the school of tourism and hospitality (STH) Alumni, Mr Arthur Gillis was honoured with UJ Alumni Awards on Friday, 25 November 2016. Arthur is currently the CEO of Platinum Hospitality Holdings, a leading hotel asset management company with approximately 20 hotels in South Africa, and the Non-Executive Chairman, Africa Development, for Marriott International. The STH has a proud track record of alumni who have shaped the South African tourism and hospitality industry. Arthur Gillis counts among the most successful. He contributed to the establishment of the STH and supports its students, and takes pride in being a UJ alumnus. He was the first Alumnus of the Year ever in any faculty at the University. “As a University, we are represented by the graduates we produce,” said Ms Suzan Hlahane, Acting Senior Manager: Alumni and Special Projects, UJ. “Our standing in the eyes of the world is directly linked to our alumni’s achievements and their contributions to society.” Read more |
| STH Missing Middle:
Have you heard of the Missing Middle? UJ has launched the biggest fundraising campaign ever undertaken by a South African institution of higher learning in support of students who do not qualify for NSFAS support, but too poor to afford fees and economically do not qualify for commercial loans – they are the “Missing Middle”. The STH funding campaign, #STHBeTheSolution, will aid the STH Missing Middle students in paying for and ultimately completing their studies.
