The School of Consumer Intelligence and Information Systems (SCiiS), housed within the College of Business and Economics (CBE) at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), hosted Distinguished Visiting Professor Dr Rutvij H. Jhaveri from 7–9 July 2026.
Organized through the Department of Applied Information Systems (AIS), the three-day academic visit formed a key component of UJ’s ongoing commitment to international research collaboration, global knowledge exchange, and academic excellence within the information systems and consumer intelligence domains.
The program opened with targeted research consultations between Dr Jhaveri and academics from the Department of Applied Information Systems. These sessions focused on aligning shared research interests, evaluating international publication opportunities, and identifying long-term areas for institutional collaboration.
Following the faculty meetings, Dr Jhaveri led an expert student session titled Data Structures: The Secret Behind Fast and Smart Software. Through practical demonstrations and interactive discussions, he emphasized to students that mastering efficient data structures is foundational to developing high-performance artificial intelligence and machine learning applications.
The second day centered on a dedicated masterclass titled Research Publications: From Idea to Impact. During this session, Dr Jhaveri shared actionable insights on effective research positioning, selecting high-impact target journals, maximizing citation influence, and framing studies to meet international publication standards. Speaking at the event, Professor Stella Bvuma urged academics and postgraduate students to maximize the opportunities offered by the Distinguished Visiting Professor program to expand their global research networks and boost scholarly outputs.
The final day focused on cementing long-term scholarly ties between the UJ and Pandit Deendayal Energy University (PDEU). AIS academics and Dr Jhaveri held follow-up planning sessions to map out priority research themes and establish timeline commitments for upcoming joint publications. To conclude the visit, Dr Jhaveri participated in a cultural tour of Soweto alongside UJ stakeholders, offering an opportunity to experience South Africa’s historic heritage and build informal connections with university staff.
The visit delivered immediate benefits across the department and wider university community. Beyond foundational knowledge exchange, faculty members established working groups for joint research papers currently under development.
Postgraduate students gained direct momentum from the engagement. Immediately following the publication masterclass, students-initiated discussions with Dr Jhaveri regarding potential paper co-authorship and future academic co-supervision arrangements. By strengthening foundational knowledge in AI and data structures while building concrete research pipelines with Pandit Deendayal Energy University, the engagement reinforced UJ’s strategic commitments to innovation, internationalization, and global research partnerships.
