The University of Johannesburg’s (UJ) Professor Shireen Motala has been awarded the SARChI Chair: Teaching and Learning by the National Research Foundation (NRF), South Africa.
The South African Research Chairs Initiative (SARChI) was established in 2006 by the then Department of Science and Technology (now Department of Science and Innovation) under the custodianship of the National Research Foundation (NRF).
The Tier-1 chair is funded by the Department of Higher Education And Training (DHET) and coordinated by the NRF.
Prof Motala is currently the Head: Postgraduate School (PGS), University of Johannesburg (UJ) and a professor in the Faculty of Education (FoE), UJ. The SARChI is located within the FoE.
Prof Motala is an established rated researcher and her research interests and area of expertise includes:
- Equity and social justice; Teaching and learning in higher education; Schooling; Access to Higher Education; Education – Finance; Education policy; Postgraduate education
She has recently edited the book: “From Ivory Towers to Ebony Towers: Transforming Humanities Curricula in South Africa, Africa, and African-American Studies” (published by Jacana, Mar. 2020).
Prof Motala’s achievement follows that of Prof Philiswa Nomngongo from the Department of Applied Chemistry, Faculty of Science who was awarded the (SARChI) Chair in Nanotechnology and Water on 12 December 2019.
