The University of Johannesburg (UJ) received a R12.5 million cash boost towards the upgrade of academic facilities, capacity building and student support in the mining and engineering fields by South African gold mining company, Sibanye Gold Limited on Friday, 25 July 2014.
This investment will be used for refurbishment of teaching and learning venues in the UJ’s Perskor building, adjacent to the Doornfontein Campus. The various lecture venues (both small and large), and facilities will boast state-of-the-art equipment, high-quality information technology and computer laboratories.
“It is encouraging to see Sibanye Gold partnering with the University. This investment enables UJ to make the Perskor building a place of learning of thousands of young people studying towards BTech and Diploma qualifications in Engineering Technology. UJ’s Department of Mining Engineering is the only one in the country offering contact tuition for a National Diploma and Bachelor of Technology as well as a full-time contact programme in Mine Surveying. We salute Sibanye Gold’s immense generosity towards the training of mining engineers and the work of the University. We regard this as the beginning of a long term partnership,” says Prof Saurabh Sinha, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment at UJ.
