[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]While there is increasing awareness of the central role that neighbourhoods and environmental factors have on child safety, few studies have examined children’s perceptions of the natural and built environment, especially those children living in challenging circumstances.

To address these issues, Dr Sadiyya Haffejee explored children’s perceptions and experiences of their challenging physical and natural environments in Orange Farm. In order to understand and characterise these environments, the team is using high resolution satellite remote sensing (RS) techniques to reveal the environmental parameters or urban forms that children may perceive as safe or unsafe.

By so doing, we seek to explore the potential for mapping safe and resilient places for children; an essential activity in highlighting areas where children live in environmental conditions that impact their resilience and long-term development.  

Data was gathered in October and November 2021 and data analysis will be completed in 2022.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
