The Gauteng City-Region Observatory’s (GCRO) Quality of Life Survey 2015 is the largest ever social attitudes survey conducted in the Gauteng province.
The results of the 2015 Survey will be launched by GCRO Executive Director, Rob Moore, and responded to by Gauteng Premier, Honourable David Makhura, at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) on Tuesday 28 June 2016.
This is the fourth in a series of biennial surveys and boasts over 30 000 respondents, sampled to provide robust results at provincial, municipal and ward levels. The Quality of Life Survey gives key insights into the lives and opinions of Gauteng’s residents. It provides a holistic assessment of life in the Gauteng City-Region and zooms in to identify key areas and groups needing intervention and support. It serves as a tracking and diagnostic tool, affording a rich information resource for policy makers and the public wanting to see where progress is being made, and where concerns remain.
The survey asked questions on basic services, satisfaction with government, transport and mobility, livelihoods, local community and neighbourhood dynamics, health and well-being, migration, as well as political and social values and attitudes.
The launch presentation will:
- Reveal current levels of satisfaction with key services such as water, electricity, waste, health and education
- Show changing levels of satisfaction with national, provincial and local government since 2009, and in particular highlight a recent reduction in dissatisfaction with Gauteng municipalities
- Explore key reasons for dissatisfaction with local government
- Provide an overview of economic conditions in Gauteng, including low and declining levels of entrepreneurship and high levels of business failure
- Analyse key social attitudes, notably with regards to trust between races, prejudice and hostilities
- Analyse key political opinions on questions such as whether South Africa is a failed state, whether corruption is a threat to our democracy, and whether the upcoming elections will be free and fair
- Analyse overall quality of life in Gauteng, usingan index of over 50 indicators, and how this has changed since 2009.
The Gauteng City-Region Observatory (GCRO) was established in 2008 as a partnership between the University of Johannesburg (UJ), the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) and the Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG), with local government in Gauteng also represented on the GCRO Board.

The formal presentation and responses will run from 10:30 until 12:30, after which there will be an opportunity for the media to engage with the Premier of Gauteng as well as local government leaders on questions and issues raised by the results.
The media engagement session will last 45 minutes, from 12:30 till 13:15, followed by a cocktail lunch.
The media is also welcome to approach GCRO researchers for deeper insight into the thematic areas covered in the presentation.
