Johannesburg Business School launches executive training programmes

With a strong focus on leadership, management and innovation in the African context, Johannesburg Business School’s (JBS) executive programmes will educate and mentor future generations of African leaders and managers.

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) is positioning itself as an educational institution central to the fourth industrial revolution, within the context of the changing social, political and economic fortunes of Africa. The JBS forms part of the College of Business and Economics at UJ, which consists of more than 100 full-time faculty members. With twice as many full-time faculty as any other business school in South Africa, the JBS strives to have a positive and lasting impact on both the economy and society. With a clear focus on African management and leadership in the global environment of business, purpose-driven values and principles are at the core of the JBS’s teaching, learning and research.

The JBS will be central to positioning UJ as a tertiary institution in the fourth industrial revolution by supporting a Business Academia ecosystem that produces socially aware graduates. Higher Education is vital to entering the fourth industrial revolution, and ensuring that Africa becomes “future proof”.

The JBS is launching its executive programme offerings with a course in “The art of storytelling”. If you are a leader, you are the narrator. Today, more and more organisations and institutions recognise the power of narrative and story as a core leadership discipline. This imperative to enable African storytellers is what JBS hopes to achieve with its first programme in a progressive and accessible executive programme suite.

The impact of storytelling is fully visible when developing any successful organisation. By inviting customers and markets to engage with your offerings, you create powerful mechanisms to preserve your unique culture, archive knowledge, and speed up the change process.

In this practical and interactive workshop, world-renowned and bestselling business author David Hutchens will introduce you to the fast-growing body of theory around developing an organisational narrative. You will be empowered to identify the narrative assets that define your role and your leadership style.

David Hutchens has been exploring the intersection of narrative, leadership, and complex systems change for over 20 years. As a bestselling author, business writer and learning designer, David has created solutions for the Coca-Cola Company, PayPal, Walmart, IBM, L’Oréal, the US Olympic Committee, and others. His partnerships include building a story culture at Accenture, and a recurring instructor position with the globally renowned INSEAD School of Business in Fontainebleau, France.

Within the strong foundations of UJ with its rich academic environment and teaching heritage, the JBS, led by Professor Lyal White, is creating an accessible and progressive business school in Africa. By embracing new technology, teaching and learning methods, the JBS will enable the creation of innovative new business models in Africa and produce visionary and critical leaders.

The ‘Art of storytelling’ will take place at the Johannesburg Country Club on 20-21 August 2018.

Cost: R15 000 per person (including a participation kit: Circle of the 9 Muses by David Hutchens, a story map for constructing high-impact stories and The Leadership Story Deck for finding stories connected to the work.
