11-15 July 2016
The SARChI Chair in Industrial Development has been involved in delivering the inaugural GTAC Public Economics Winter School. The Chair, together with CCRED (with Dr Judith Fessehaie as convenor), were selected to run the Industrial Economic Competitiveness stream of the Winter School.
Participants at the Winter School comprised graduate students from universities across South Africa, and officials from National Treasury and other government departments. This initiative of GTAC is aiming at building capacity in public economics.
The Winter School was opened by Minister Pravin Gordhan. Topics in the Industrial Economic Competitiveness stream included competition and industrialisation, incentives, industrial clusters, macroeconomic policy and industrial competitiveness and regional industrialisation. Amongst the speakers were Dr Antonio Andreoni, Prof Justin Barnes, Kuben Naidoo, Nigel Gwynne-Evans, Garth Strachan, Prof Samantha Ashman, Landon McMillan, Malebo Mabitje-Thompson, Dr Judith Fessehaie, Dr Simon Roberts and various other speakers from CCRED. One of our SARChI doctoral students, Phumzile Ncube, presented her research on the poultry value chain across Botswana, South African and Zimbabwe.
The Winter School, and the Industrial Economic Competitiveness stream thereof, were highly successful. Very positive feedback was received from participants and we are glad to have contributed to this important capacity-building initiative.
