Fourteen UJ athletes, coaches, medical staff in Team SA squad for FISU World University Games in China

University students across the world are gearing up for the upcoming FISU World University Games which will take place in Chengdu, China from 28 July to 08 August 2023. On Tuesday, 27 June 2023, the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC), together with University Sport South Africa (USSA), announced the 150-member South African squad which will represent the country in Asia.

In the squad announced, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) has nine (9) travelling athletes, two (2) management, and three (3) non-traveling athletes.

“We are proud of our UJ student-athletes and coaches who are selected to represent the country in the World Student Games in China. Having 9 athletes, two staff as part of the Team SA management, and 3 other students selected as non-traveling athletes coming from the same university is a big achievement. These student-athletes have done extremely well in the recent USSA championships in Bloemfontein, and that has put them in good stead for selection. We wish them well and believe they will bring back some medals,” says Ms Nompilo Zondi, Senior Manager: UJ Sport Clubs Department.

The announced Team SA squad features UJ student-athletes, coaches and physiotherapist.
