Election results for new UJ SRC concluded

The final election results of the 2016 Student Representative Council (SRC) at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), have been release today, Thursday, 28 April 2016, after the electoral commission responsible for running the elections attended to objections and appeals raised by some candidates.

The SA Students Congress (SASCO) has obtained the highest number of seats (45 of 48) on all campuses, following three days of polling from Wednesday, 13th to Friday, 15th April.

Overall, 10 107 or 20% of UJ’s 51 313 students voted for their new representative body, slightly down from 22% at the last election in October 2014. There were no elections in 2015.

The voter turnout by campus indicated marked differences in student interest levels in the electoral process, with 44.8% or 2 880 of 6 426 of the student body at the Soweto Campus voting, 26% or 1 278 of 4 925 at Auckland Park Bunting Road Campus, 2 808 of 11 506 or 24.4% in Doornfontein, and 11% or 3 141 of 28 456 at the Auckland Park Kingsway Campus.

“I’m of firm belief the new student leadership will advance robust student character and play a significant role in the everyday activities of the University,” says Ms Tumi Mketi, Senior Executive Director in the Office of the Vice-Chancellor.
