COVID-19 Update 9

​Dear UJ Community,

As communicated in recent weeks, the national lockdown is an unprecedented decision that has necessitated that we shift to online teaching and learning. We have been steadfast in our commitment, as we embrace this remote form of delivery of the academic programme from 20 April 2020, to ensuring that all our students have access to the necessary devices and data. As we were acutely aware of the anxiety and uncertainty caused by this mode of teaching and learning, we kept reminding our students that we were working closely with telecommunications providers to assist us in providing data solutions.

In this regard, we are delighted to announce that the University of Johannesburg has reached agreements with cellular network providers – MTN, Cell C, Vodacom and Telkom – to provide all UJ undergraduate, Honours and Master’s students, registered in a formal (subsidised) programme, with 30GB (10GB anytime plus 20GB night owl data) for a period of 30 days.

All students are required to please verify their current cell phone number by clicking here. If any of our students do not verify their cell number by Wednesday, 22 April 2020, 12h00 (noon), they will unfortunately not receive the 30GB of data. Students will receive a notification by Thursday, 23 April 2020, after 12h00, and they must us know that their data is ready for use.

This provision of data is in addition to the 1 750 laptops that have been distributed to all qualifying, first-year NSFAS students this year alone, and a further 4000 available to distributed. It is also worth noting that the university has issued 21000 devices to qualifying students since 2015. This demonstrates our commitment to ensuring that none of our students is left behind, as we move to online modes of teaching and learning. Further details about the distribution of devices will be communicated soon.
