Communicare: Journal for Communication Studies in Africa, one of the three journals published by the School of Communication, has undergone a significant overhaul. It acquired a new title, new host and new website. Its latest cover page and page layout were designed by Given Dube, BA Honours in Design student.
The word communicare originates from Latin and means “to make common,” “to share,” “to link”, “to join”. True to its title, Communicare shares research in a broad spectrum of communication disciplines, including but not limited to journalism, film studies, strategic communication, development communication, media studies, digital media, gender and cultural studies.
Previously a subscription journal, Communicare joins the UJ Library Open Access System, which is currently a home to 15 journals published by different UJ entities. Open access means that the full text of scholarly articles is available online and accessible to anyone without restrictions. In this way, Communicare strives to promote excellent communication scholarship from the African and Global South perspectives.
The journal’s former subtitle was Journal for Communication Sciences in Southern Africa. “The subtitle change emphasises the journal’s ambition to expand its readership and contributors’ network beyond Southern Africa”, says Dr Anna Oksiutycz of the Department of Strategic Communication – Communicare’s Editor-in-Chief.
The journal has a rich history dating back to the 1980s.
