A UJ alumnus transforming communities through education and empowerment

Mr. Adil Shaik Mungalee, a Master of Education (MEd) alumnus from the University of Johannesburg (UJ), is making a profound impact in his community through a range of innovative and empowering initiatives. His dedication to youth development, food security, and community upliftment has not only transformed the lives of countless individuals but has also earned him national recognition.

Youth development programmes: Fishing Fanatix and Sisinde Survival Skills

Driven by a passion for youth empowerment, Mungalee founded two significant youth development programmes: Fishing Fanatix and Sisinde Survival Skills. Through Fishing Fanatix (www.fishingfanatix.co.za), he engages young people in activities that promote patience, discipline, and a deep respect for nature. This initiative offers more than just a pastime; it serves as a vital platform for teaching essential life skills, providing young individuals with a constructive outlet that helps them navigate life’s challenges.

Sisinde Survival Skills (www.sisinde.co.za) is another groundbreaking programme that Mungalee established to equip youth with practical survival knowledge. From bushcraft to basic first aid, participants are immersed in hands-on experiences designed to build resilience, confidence, and self-reliance. Many of these young individuals come from challenging backgrounds, and this program gives them the tools they need to thrive in the face of adversity.

Addressing food insecurity: Dijo Tsa Batho Bohle

Recognising the growing issue of food insecurity, Mungalee launched Dijo Tsa Batho Bohle (Food for Everyone), a community farming initiative aimed at promoting sustainable agriculture. This project: (sites.google.com/dadooprimaryschool.com/dijotsabathobothle/home ) empowers community members with the knowledge and tools necessary to grow their own food, fostering self-sufficiency and resilience.

By focusing on vulnerable families, Dijo Tsa Batho Bohle ensures that they have consistent access to fresh, nutritious food, addressing both immediate needs and providing long-term solutions through education and sustainable practices.

National recognition: Best Teacher Award

Mungalee’s innovative teaching methods and unwavering dedication to his students have not gone unnoticed. In 2022, he was honoured with the National Best Teacher Award at the 22nd National Teaching Awards, hosted by the Department of Basic Education.

This prestigious accolade, benchmarked against global standards such as the Global Teacher Prize, was awarded in recognition of his commitment to creating an environment where learners can thrive both academically and personally. Mungalee’s teaching philosophy goes beyond traditional classroom instruction; he integrates real-world applications into his lessons, ensuring that students are prepared for life beyond school.

His ability to connect with students and inspire them to reach their full potential was further recognised in 2023, when the Department of Basic Education commended him for his ongoing contributions to education and community development. This continuous recognition underscores Mungalee’s commitment to the holistic development of his students, blending academic rigor with practical life skills.

A commitment to community and mentorship

Beyond his youth development programmes and educational work, Mungalee is actively involved in mentoring youth and contributing to broader community-building efforts. He firmly believes in the transformative power of education and hands-on experience, dedicating his time to projects that inspire and uplift young people.
