UJ conveys condolences following the death of a school learner in Soweto

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) is deeply saddened by the death of a school learner in Soweto, following an altercation that allegedly involved some of its students. The incident occurred off campus, on Monday, 5 May 2025. Two of the students are currently in police custody, and the matter is under police investigation.

As a University, we convey our deepest condolences and sympathy to the deceased learner’s family, relatives and the school community he was part of. This is not the kind of news any parent expects, and our prayers are with the family and friends of the learner during this difficult time.

UJ wishes to state on record that it condemns in the strongest terms possible any acts of violence and intimidation. Such behaviour starkly contrasts with the University’s values of respect, dignity, and integrity, and the University will not hesitate to take immediate and strong action against any of our students, should they be found guilty of any transgressions.

UJ remains committed to building positive and constructive relationships with the community. The University has, through its designated structures, been engaging with the local community and relevant authorities with a view to fostering relationships built on trust and common understanding.

Additionally, UJ has partnered with the Gauteng Department of Community Safety to create safer environments for students, staff and the general public. To this end, UJ and the Department recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance campus and community safety.

A key aspect of the agreement is the integration of UJ’s security systems with the Provincial Integrated Community Centre (PICC), and the implementation of joint safety awareness campaigns focusing on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide, Human Trafficking, and Substance Abuse. It also aims to create safer, smarter environments for students and the broader Gauteng community.
