A Bachelor of Engineering Technology in Extraction Metallurgy student from the University of Johannesburg (UJ), Michelle Moganedi, was recently crowned the 2023 Disabled Sportswoman of the Year at the Gauteng Sports Awards on Saturday, 18 February 2023. Moganedi (20) has had a phenomenal season in sport in 2022 and has made impressive contributions in the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) Players’ Commission.
She is one of the eight (8) players across the world who play a major role in speaking about the transformation and growth of wheelchair basketball globally. The Awards ceremony, held at Tshwane University of Technology in Soshanguve, celebrated top athletes, coaches, media personnel and technical officials in Gauteng Province’s sports fraternity.

“When I heard my name being called out as the winner, my mind just blanked out for seconds followed by a voice in my head saying: ‘you did it, you made it possible’,” Moganedi said ecstatically in her recent interview just after the awards.
The wheelchair basketball ace achieved a milestone after winning the African 2022 U/25 world championship qualifier. Last year, Moganedi led the South African women’s 3×3 team in the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England. The multitalented maestro also participates in other sporting codes such as javelin, shot put and discus.
