The academic excellence at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) was highlighted and celebrated on Monday, 23 May 2011 when the top ten achieving graduates in each of UJ’s nine faculties were honoured for their outstanding achievements.
Hosted by the University’s Alumni Office the function reflected the quality of UJ’s students and its comprehensive educational programmes. Dedicated to the goal of seeing graduates go forth to be successful in their careers, the academia embraces each graduate’s achievement during this period – as it is indeed a huge honour both for them and for the university. “It clearly reflects the high international standards for which UJ and its graduates alike are striving and are now being recognised for,” said Prof Ihron Rensburg, Vice-Chancellor and Principal, UJ.
Rensburg highlighted that as UJ graduates they are UJ ambassadors even though they are no longer students, they will always be part of the UJ family. “UJ cannot its goals and dreams without the participation of its alumni,” said Prof Rensburg.
The Almni Office whishes to use its various programmes to develop and foster a long-term relationship with UJ’s alumni and to give former and current students opportunities to celebrate their roots.
Programmes on offer include the Alumni Office’s Affinity Group Programme, a programme that aims to mentors current UJ students, supports the UJ development vision, assists with fundraising efforts, career development and bursaries and connects graduates who have particular common interests.
The Goodwill Ambassador Programme enlists volunteer services and support from prominent alumni and friends to advance the University’s strategic goals and those of UJ Alumni.
The Current Student Alumni Programme aims at investing in young future alumni to capture interest and cultivate loyalty towards the institution during the time when students are still engaged in their studies.
The UJ Staff Alumni Programme focuses on engaging staff alumni through events and Affinity Groups to encourage them to once again be part of UJ’s vision from now into the future.
Rensburg concludes: “You as alumni, now, can help give back to UJ in many ways. Join the Alumni Network and stay connected! I encourage and challenge you to become a champion of your alma mater in every walk of life.”
