On Thursday 29 September, Senior Accountancy Lecturer at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) Mr Lyndsay Maseko (34) won the PPS Power of Professional Thinking award at the SAICA Top 35 under 35 function. Mr Maseko is passionate about academia and enjoys motivating students to perform at the best of their ability. He mentors students to be respected, responsible and caring human beings.
Says Maseko: “Being in the academia is a calling from deep within to make a difference, inspire and motivate. It’s a calling for which you don’t expect accolades, but a recognition such as this inspires one to do even more. UJ is renowned for its excellence in accounting education and this award re-emphasises this fact.”
Maseko lectures in the Department of Accountancy in the Faculty of Economic and Financial Sciences.
To be a nominated as a “35 under 35” finalist, candidates must be a member of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountant (SAICA); have willpower and vision to succeed; epitomize what it means to be a leader; have perseverance to pursue their dreams and or vision; have passion to make a difference; be a risk-taker and paradigm changer; transform business and change views; stand out amongst peers; have confidence and an inner drive to make an impact in business; and lead where others follow.
Besides his involvement in lectures for the Thuthuka fund, Maseko assists with annual career days organised by the Tirisano Foundation, a non-profit organisation uplifting scholars in Soweto and recently established a mentorship programme in his rural hometown of Aberdeen in the Eastern Cape.
Maseko is a lecturer at APT and has recently been appointed director and shareholder of the company, which is one of SAICA’s two accredited professional programme providers. He serves as the audit committee chairman of Safika Resources (Pty) Ltd.
Maseko recently co-authored an academic article that was published in an internationally accredited research journal. He has completed his Master’s degree in Computer Auditing with a minor dissertation investigating the application of King III as a framework for effective IT governance, for which he received a grading above the 75th percentile.
