UJ Rescue: Driving Societal Impact – Mozambique 2019 & 2026

In 2019, when Cyclone Idai devastated Mozambique, the University of Johannesburg sent volunteers. In 2026, when floods struck again, UJ deployed a fully equipped rescue team through its state-of-the-art Rescue Simulation Centre.

This is the story of how UJ transformed its humanitarian response capability in seven years, and why it matters.

The team deployed to Mozambique in January 2026 under the South African flag, coordinated through the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) and South Africa’s National Disaster Management Centre, in partnership with Rescue South Africa.
