Vice-Chancellor Message – 03 May 2024

Dear UJ community,

In the past few years, our University has driven several initiatives to assist students with tuition fees and other financial needs. Among these initiatives is the Double Our Future Impact campaign, which we introduced in 2022 to help cover the registration costs for academically deserving and needy students. Many of these students are classified as the Missing Middle, meaning that they do not qualify for National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) support.

Entsika Foundation donates R1 million to UJ

I am thrilled to announce that our University, through the Transformation Unit, has been privileged to receive an R1 million donation from the Entsika Foundation. The money will fund female students who are pursuing their studies in the field of engineering. Our Fundraising and Development Office has been working with a team from Entsika to identify students who will benefit from the donation. I wish to express my sincere gratitude to Professor Zakhele Mkhize, the Founder and Director of Entsika Consulting Services, for this generous donation.

UJ Future Walk 2024

The UJ Sport division, working together with the Fundraising and Development Office, was able to organise the UJ Future Walk in 2015, 2017 and 2023 to raise funds for our academically deserving and needy students. Another important purpose of the event is to encourage a healthy and active lifestyle for our staff, students, and surrounding communities. This year, UJ Sport will host two UJ Future Walk events at the AW Muller Stadium on the APB campus. The first event will take place on Saturday, 18 May 2024 as a build-up to the main event, scheduled for Saturday, 28 September 2024. I urge all our staff members and all students to support this initiative. You may purchase tickets for the UJ Future Walk via the UJ Sports App.

Celebrating 30 Years of Democracy

Universities are centres of knowledge and critical thinking. You will notice that various faculties and divisions have hosted events related to the 30 years of democracy in our country. This coming Sunday, 5 May, the SABC, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme, will host an election event at our University. The event, called Election 360, will be held in the Sanlam Auditorium at Auckland Park Kingsway Campus, from 19:00 until 20:00.

It will be broadcast live on SABC television. Our students will be part of the audience, so I urge you to tune in to see them sharing their insights into our democracy. Furthermore, I would like to acknowledge the remarkable coverage we have received in various media outlets regarding these discussions. The numerous media clippings highlighting our University’s commitment to promoting dialogue and reflection on this important milestone have undoubtedly elevated our standing in the academic community and beyond.

Second Annual Shireen Abu Akleh Memorial Lecture

Next week, on Wednesday, 8 May 2024, UJ will host the second annual Shireen Abu Akleh Memorial Lecture, organised by the Faculty of Humanities. The lecture, titled ‘The Responsibility of the Academy in a Time of Genocide,’ seeks to honour the memory of Shireen Abu Akleh, a revered Palestinian journalist who lost her life during the ongoing Palestine-Israeli conflict.

Dr Naledi Pandor, Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, will deliver a keynote address. Her insights into the role and duties of academic institutions in conflict-ridden regions grappling with increasing levels of genocide will provide invaluable perspectives on the crisis. Dr Pandor will be joined by esteemed guests, including Mr Ronnie Kasrils, former South African Minister of Intelligence, and Mr Zane Dangor, Director-General of the Department of International Relations and Cooperation.

Universitas 21

Last week, I had the privilege of leading a UJ delegation to China for the Universitas 21 (U21) Annual General Meeting and Presidential Symposium. The symposium, themed ‘Global Universities and the Workforce of the Future,’ explored how universities can adapt to the evolving needs of society. It was an enriching experience that provided valuable insights into the higher education landscape and UJ’s role in shaping the future workforce.

Additionally, I am delighted to announce that Professor Kammila Naidoo, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, has been honoured with the prestigious U21 Internationalisation Award. This recognition celebrates her outstanding efforts in promoting global collaboration and advancing internationalisation principles within academia. Prof Naidoo’s dedication to nurturing global partnerships aligns with UJ’s commitment to fostering a culture of internationalisation and academic excellence. Prof Naidoo, your achievement is a testament to the University’s ongoing efforts to nurture a global perspective and provide opportunities for students and staff to excel in an interconnected world.

Professorial inauguration

Recently, we welcomed Professor Abejide Ade-Ibijola to our esteemed Professorship. In his address titled “Mind, Heart, Grenade: A Story of a Career of Innovation,” Prof Ade-Ibijola captivated the audience with a narrative that transcended technological advancements. He explored the intersection of AI algorithms with real-world applications, shedding light on technology’s profound societal impact. Beyond his impressive academic accomplishments, Prof Ade-Ibijola’s commitment to nurturing innovation and talent development shines brightly. Prof Ade-Ibijola, we have full confidence in your contributions to our community. Congratulations. Watch the inauguration below:

Honouring extraordinary mothers and mother figures

Last year, a circular was issued asking UJ staff to contribute articles paying tribute to their mothers and mother figures, which will be published in a book called Mama. Most importantly, the book is published by our very own UJ Press. It has been such an immense pleasure reading the stories submitted by some of you, which made me realise the abundance of talented writers we have at our University. I am delighted to announce that the book will be released next week on Friday, 10 May 2024 with Mother’s Day just around the corner. Please join us for the UJ Press published book launch.

Sounds of Democracy

I am eagerly anticipating tonight’s event, where the captivating ‘Sounds of Democracy’ will resonate throughout the Keorapetse William Kgositsile Theatre at the UJ Arts Centre. With Sizwe Mondlane at the baton and Renette Bouwer directing, this performance promises to be remarkable. The respected UJ Choir, celebrated for its achievements, will infuse the essence of commemorating 30 years of democracy with a dynamic programme that mirrors the vibrancy of our society, blending African and Western repertoire seamlessly. This event marks the debut of the UJ Choir’s 2024 programme, coinciding with its 50th anniversary. Be part of this unforgettable celebration. Secure your tickets for the performance here.

Reflecting on Worker’s Day

Lastly, click here to read my latest opinion article that appeared in the Daily Maverick, in which I outline approaches to revitalise the South African economy while reflecting on the significance of Worker’s Day. I also emphasise the significance of vital skills such as digital literacy, technological proficiency, adaptability, creativity, critical thinking, and strong interpersonal abilities. I trust you will find the read thought-provoking.
