Relying primarily on the savings he accumulated from his internship, Vhutshilo was determined to succeed.

“I allocated every cent towards my education. I was earning R4950 and used that money to save towards my future. I would make sure I had money for rent, food and transportation to campus so my family did not have to worry.”

He secured a bursary through the University’s Department of Social Work and Community Development in the Faculty of Humanities to continue his Honours studies.

When he first started at UJ in 2020 to study towards his first degree, Bachelor of Arts in Community Development, Vhutshilo wanted to inspire students back home in Limpopo.

“I come from a deep rural area in Limpopo called Elim Riverplaats and we had a lot of issues around community development. There is no access to water, for more than 10 years the area has been without water. The school in the area has damaged chairs, tables and books. It was these circumstances that made me strive to do better and study towards community development. Where I come from education is not something people feel drawn towards because of the challenges. I want to be one of the people who can go back to the community and inspire them to want more for themselves.”

He faced numerous challenges during his journey to his Honours degree, Vhutshilo lived in a back room in Soweto’s Diepkloof area.

“With limited resources, I lacked basic necessities like a chair, table, and wardrobe. I resorted to storing my belongings in a large box. The harsh conditions and daily struggles began to take a toll on my mental health. Walking to the UJ campus, often in the rain or scorching heat, and sometimes at night, was exhausting. I started experiencing emotional breakdowns and felt overwhelmed by depression.”

Seeking support, he reached out to the University’s Psychology Department.

“Despite the obstacles, I persevered, driven by my determination to succeed. As time passed, I began to flourish under the guidance of counseling from PsyCad. My focus shifted, and I became more dedicated to my studies. This newfound determination led to outstanding results: I received the Top Honours Student award in my course and graduated with distinction.”

In November last year, Vhutshilo secured a position as a Community Development Officer at Hope and Homes for Children South Africa. However, his journey took an unexpected turn just two weeks into his new role. He survived a devastating taxi accident, which left him badly injured and one of the few survivors from the crash.

Once again, he persevered with the support of his family and on 10 March 2025, he proudly walked across the stage, graduating with Honours in Community Development with distinction.

“This moment was particularly poignant, as I had overcome incredible obstacles to achieve my goal.”

This year, the 24 year old is taking a much needed break. He plans to continue his studies in 2026, pursuing his Master’s degree.

“I want to definitely continue with my studies and develop my career further so that one day in the future I can open an NGO and actively help poor communities.”
