The University of Johannesburg (UJ) Senior Men’s Rugby Team faced challenges in their FNB Varsity Cup campaign this year (2025). However, a significant highlight emerged with the crowning of their talented young playmaker, Alzeadon Felix, as the tournament’s Suzuki Rookie of the Year on Monday, 14 April 2025.
Despite the team’s overall seventh-place finish, 19-year-old Felix provided moments of brilliance that earned him this prestigious accolade. Hailing from a rugby-loving family in Cape Town, Western Cape, Felix credits his father as his greatest influence in his journey from school rugby to the UJ senior squad. “My father played a significant role in pushing me to become a better player,” Felix acknowledged. “To be named Rookie of the Year makes me really proud of myself, and I believe this is a testament to my father’s belief in me.”
Felix attributes his success in the four out of seven matches he played for the “Orange Army” to a focus on executing the fundamentals effectively. “When there were chances and space to run into, I made the right moves when the opportunity presented itself, and I think that aided my team’s performances in the games I played,” he explained.
The dynamic youngster showcased his attacking prowess by scoring two tries in separate matches during the campaign. Looking ahead, Felix harbors ambitious goals of playing professional rugby for the Lions and ultimately representing South Africa as a Springbok.
Despite the individual recognition for Felix, the UJ Senior Men’s Team now faces a crucial promotion-relegation playoff match against Nelson Mandela University on May 5, 2025.
