Vinod Kumar Gupta, a distinguished visiting Professor and South African Research Chair for Nanotechnology for Water in the Department of Applied Chemistry at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), has been admitted by Council to the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC) as a Fellow. The FRSC title is given to people who “have made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of the chemical sciences; or to the advancement of the chemical sciences as a profession; or have been distinguished in the management of a chemical sciences organisation”.
Prof Gupta’s research focuses on arsenic chemistry with reference to water and environment which is relevant to its toxicity arising out of different arsenic species and finally its remediation technologies. Prof Gupta’s research examines the direct association between elevated arsenic exposure through drinking water and prevalence of different types of cancers.
Professor Gupta is the South African Research Chair for Nanotechnology for Water and a Professor in the Department of Applied Chemistry at the University of Johannesburg. He joined the University as a Distinguished Visiting Professor under the Global Excellence and Stature initiative and was subsequently approved by the NRF as the aforementioned SARChI Chairholder. He was a Marie Curie Fellow at the Department of Chemistry, University of Regensburg, Germany, Visiting Professor (DAAD) at the Technical University of Chemnitz and Freie University of Berlin, and a KFUPM Chair Professor at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Mineral in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. He has visited more than 25 countries for research and academic collaborations.
Professor Gupta is a sought after speaker in the area of nanotechnology for water, waste water treatment, environmental chemistry and chemical sensors. He has delivered several invited keynote lectures at international conferences. He has presented more than 50 papers at national international conferences and has outstanding research credentials. He has published four books and more than 600 research papers in journals of international repute and very high impact factors.
Prof Gupta has contributed 14 book chapters in various books and encyclopedias and has published 37 reviews and 4 books on topics of contemporary significance. According to the Scopus database, his publications have received more than 46000 citations and he has an h-index of 139. His Google Scholar profile shows that he has over 56600 citations and an h-index of 142.
