The Sanlam Auditorium at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) was filled with excitement, inspiration and empowerment as UJ hosted the second Mini Open Day for prospective university students. The aim of the event, taking place over two days, is for high school learners, parents and their mentors to see and experience the university first hand while also getting in depth information about the various courses offered by the university.
Mr Pieter Durandt, Manager of Student Marketing, said that in the past the university used to host big Open Day events however, they decided to offer a series of Mini Open Days that provide learners with detailed information. With this approach the learners then gain thorough understanding of the university and every question that each learner has is addressed.
The learners were also given a tour to experience the vibrant campus life at the UJ. The Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment took learners for a real-life experience in their laboratory where they participated in a hands on experimental learning session.
Learners taught real life experience at the University of Johannesburg’s (UJ) Faculty of Engineering laboratory.
Highschool learners share their sentiments about UJ’s Open Day:
Warona Moeng and Tirisano Makweno grade 11 learners from Platinum Village Secondary School in Rustenberg, said that the Mini Open Day was an eye-opening experience and they both said that they would like to enrol in the School of Tourism and Hospitality.
Shudufhadzo Bolonga, a Grade 12 learner at President High School, said, “I want to pursue Industrial Engineering at UJ because it is internationally recognised. The Open Day helped me explore various options the university offers.”
Hassan Ali, a Grade 12 learner from the University of Cape Town (UCT) Online High School, said he hopes to study either Law or Chemical Engineering at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) because of the many opportunities it offers. He added that attending the open day helped him better understand what is expected of him.
The Mini Open Days, which took place from Wednesday, 09 July – Thursday 10 July gave prospective students a valuable glimpse into life at UJ, helping them make informed decisions about their future studies. The two-day event left many learners feeling inspired and eager to join the university community.
