The Student Undergraduate Research Forum (SURF), an initiative of the University of Johannesburg’s Centre for Advanced Learning Technologies in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (CALTSTEAM), is charting new ground in student-led innovation. Designed to empower undergraduate students, SURF equips participants with essential research skills, hands-on experience in advanced learning technologies, and access to mentorship that prepares them for future roles in education, technology, and industry.
Through its focused learning tracks—AI & Python, XR & AR coding, and educational innovation—SURF offers a collaborative platform where students engage in real-world projects, tackle challenges, and pursue self-paced learning, all while building academic and industry readiness.
On 8 August 2025, CALTSTEAM hosted the SURF ‘Big Bang Bash’ at its state-of-the-art centre (B-Ring 301, APK Campus) to officially launch the next phase of the programme. The event brought together undergraduate students, CALTSTEAM coordinators, mentors, facilitators, and industry partners, including a guest speaker from Microsoft.
The programme featured keynote addresses exploring innovation in education, the integration of technology in learning, and new research opportunities for undergraduates. Attendees were introduced to SURF’s structure, its learning tracks, the competitive leaderboard system, and upcoming projects. Technology showcases, networking sessions, and Q&A opportunities allowed students to interact directly with industry experts and peers.
With more than 50 participants in attendance, the ‘Big Bang Bash’ was both a celebration of innovation and an onboarding session for new SURF members. By the end of the day, students had not only connected with potential mentors but also gained a clear roadmap of how to leverage SURF to advance their research and innovation skills.

As CALTSTEAM Director Prof Umesh Ramnarain noted, “SURF is more than just a programme—it’s a launchpad for the next generation of innovators, researchers, and educators.”
The momentum from the event has set the stage for a year of impactful student-led projects, underscoring UJ’s commitment to fostering a future-ready, research-driven learning culture.
