UJ’s accounting trailblazer receives top accolade

A senior accountancy lecturer and a full academic member to the University of Johannesburg’s Council walked away with top honours at the African Women Chartered Accountants virtual recognition awards on Saturday, 28 August 2021.

Ms Boniswa Madikizela, from the Department of Accountancy received the Trailblazer in Academia Award that recognises aspiring chartered accountants who are trailblazing their way to making a real and tangible impact on society.

Madikizela was honored for her continuous passion and innovation towards Accounting Education.

The African Women Chartered Accountants (AWCA) is a non-profit organisation which was founded in 2002 on the premise of mutual support and personal development of African Women Chartered Accountants. The purpose of these awards is to recognise exceptional African women business leaders who have demonstrated the tenacity to succeed in their careers, and who continue to raise the bar of excellence within the Chartered Accountancy profession.

“This award is an indication that my efforts to make a difference in the world through Accounting, and to be that positive impression to the many students I have journeyed with in the past 10 years, have not been in vain,” said Madikizela. “I hope to continue raising the bar in the Chartered Accountancy profession through the use of accounting principles to innovate, problem solve and implement strategies that lead to a financially literate and inclusive society from a personal finances perspective.”

Ms Nolwazi Mamorare, UJ’s Chief Financial Officer, is the first-place recipient of the AWCA CFO of the year: non-private sector 2020 award. She received the accolade last year for demonstrating a consistent tract record in business, development and leadership.

Prof Daneel van Lill, Executive Dean: College of Business and Economics, said Madikizela has earned this widespread recognition for strides she has made in the field of accountancy.

“Madikizela is certainly deserving of this top award from AWCA,” Prof van Lill said. “Her dedication to the continuous research and advancement of this field puts a spotlight on the abundant opportunities that exist for students and researchers within the financial industry.”
