UJFM sets a new benchmark in broadcasting with Wheatstone recognition

UJFM has achieved a groundbreaking milestone as the first South African radio station to be recognised by Wheatstone Corporation, a globally renowned broadcasting equipment manufacturer. This recognition underscores UJFM’s state-of-the-art technology and commitment to innovation, positioning it among the world’s best in broadcasting.

Senior Executive Director at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), Professor Bongani Ngqulunga, emphasised the significance of this achievement: “UJFM’s recognition by Wheatstone is a testament to our dedication to excellence in media and technology. This achievement positions us at the forefront of the broadcasting industry, demonstrating our ability to compete with the best in the world.”

Wheatstone Corporation praised UJFM’s studios, housed at UJ’s main campus, highlighting their superior design and advanced technology. The studios, equipped with Wheatstone’s IP-12 consoles, offer an intuitive and professional broadcasting experience. Touchscreen technology enhances user interaction, making the system accessible to students familiar with mobile devices.

Alex Mathaba, Managing Director of Soundfusion Media, the local agent responsible for the studio installation, lauded UJFM’s impact: “When people talk about student-run radio here being better in many ways than commercial stations elsewhere, they think of UJFM.” He credited Wheatstone’s IP-12 as a key element in the station’s cutting-edge infrastructure, allowing for a seamless and modernised broadcasting experience.

Beyond audio excellence, UJFM has embraced visual radio, integrating cameras controlled via WheatNet IP logic. This automation enhances live broadcasts by tracking microphone status, fader positions, and audio levels, ensuring professional video production without distracting presenters from their primary role. Notably, UJFM Brunch host Sindiswa Ndala leveraged this setup to launch her successful social media channel, LifeWithSinds, further showcasing the station’s influence beyond traditional radio.

The recognition from Wheatstone highlights UJFM’s role as a leader in campus radio, not just in South Africa but globally. As community stations grow, UJFM remains a beacon of excellence, offering students industry-leading experience and elevating campus broadcasting to new heights.
