UJ women’s cricket team crowned champions in thrilling Black Widow T20 final

In a captivating and nail-biting showdown, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) Women’s Premier B Team emerged victorious against GM Old Edwardians, claiming the Lions Club League 2024/25 Black Widow T20 championship title in a dramatic super over finish.

The final, held at the UJ Main Oval on Saturday, March 29th, saw both teams locked in a fierce battle, with UJ posting 106/8 in their 20 overs, matched by GM Old Edwardians’ 106/5. The tension escalated as the match proceeded to a super-over, ending in a tie, leading to a decisive second super-over. UJ ultimately clinched the championship, winning by a single run, showcasing their remarkable resilience and determination.

“What an incredible final!” exclaimed Siyabonga Sibiya, Head Coach and Manager of the UJ Cricket Club. “To go from a tied match to a tied Super Over, and then a second Super Over – winning by just one run – shows the resilience, determination, and fighting spirit of this amazing team. This was nothing short of a thriller, the team has made history with their never-give-up attitude.”

Sibiya emphasised the club’s unwavering commitment to building and sustaining the Women’s Cricket team. “This victory is a testament to that dedication,” he stated. “A special thank you and huge congratulations to Ladies Head Coach, Martin Rathogwa, for his exceptional leadership and commitment to elevating the standard, quality, and professionalism of our Ladies team.”

He also expressed gratitude to the UJ Sport senior management for their continuous support. “Your commitment to women’s sport continues to inspire and pave the way for future success. Today, we celebrate our champions because of the support you have shown to build a club culture that elevates sports for all male and female students.”

The UJ Women’s Cricket team’s championship win preceded the UJ Men’s Cricket team’s CGL Premier B final at the DP World Wanderers Stadium in Sandton, which took place on Saturday, 5 April 2025.
