Following the signing of a 10-year Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between the Universities of Johannesburg and the West Indies in Barbados last year (March 2017), Vice-Chancellors of the two institutions will jointly establish a Global African Institute. This will see the opening of a Joint Institute for Global African Affairs (IGAA) at UJ’s Institute for Pan African Thought and Conversation (IPATC) on Monday, 5 November 2018 which will foster collaborative research and teaching.

The flagship programme of this historical Institute is the establishment of a joint masters in Global African Affairs between UJ and UWI, focusing on the emerging role of Global Africa in the 21st century. Both parties agreed to establish the Institute by appointing Directors in Johannesburg and Barbados to manage the entities; disseminate its work; and identify and support scholars to implement the tasks. The UWI branch is set to be inaugurated at Cave Hill Campus in Barbados on 26 November 2018.

Professor Tshilidzi Marwala, UJ’s Vice-Chancellor and Principal, will chair a panel on “Global Africa in the Post-Apartheid Era” at the launch. Other prominent speakers on the panel include: Professor Alan Cobley, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, University of the West Indies, Cave Hill, Barbados; H.E. Ms Angella Comfort, Jamaica’s High Commissioner to South Africa; Professor Arthur Mutambara, Former Deputy Prime Minister of Zimbabwe; Professor Shahana Rasool, Head of The Department of Social Work, at the University of Johannesburg; and Professor Adekeye Adebajo, Director, Institute for Pan-African Thought and Conversation, University of Johannesburg.
