The SAPS has shared some identity details of the suspect in the case of the hijacking and kidnapping of a student who was later found unharmed and alive, albeit greatly traumatised. Initial indications are that the suspect is also a UJ student. The suspect is currently in detention. We thank the SAPS for the speedy apprehension of the suspect and recovery of the hijacked vehicle.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Ihron Rensburg and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor responsible for Student Affairs, Prof Tinyiko Maluleke met with the victim and her parents on Monday the 5th of August in order to offer the support of the university. Following the incident, entrance and general security protocols have been tightened up at the university. The university is also currently exploring several other means of enhancing its current security systems. These include increasing the number of CCTV cameras on our campuses as well as the mobilisation of all stakeholders to ensure a safer environment.
Upon final confirmation that the suspect in this case is indeed a registered UJ student, the university will institute the applicable internal disciplinary procedures.
