UJ teams #winning: USSA tournaments update

Four days into the University Sport South Africa (USSA) tournaments, which started on Monday, 29 June and will end Friday, 3 July 2015, we see the University of Johannesburg (UJ) producing excellent results.
UJ is participating in six concurrent USSA tournaments: Basketball hosted by the University of Fort Hare; Golf taking place in Port Shepstone; Hockey hosted by the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal; Netball and Rugby hosted by the University of Johannesburg; and lastly Squash hosted by the University of the Witwatersrand. Both the men and women UJ Basketball teams will be battling it out in the semi-finals on Wednesday, 2 July 2015, after consecutive victories and securing their spots by defeating the University of Limpopo 97-42 and the University of Free State 51-25 respectively, in the quarter-finals on Tuesday. Similarly, the UJ Golf A and B teams advanced to the next round after Team A prevailed over the Varsity College Golf Academy and Team B were awarded a bye.
Both UJ Hockey teams were off to a blistering start in Pietermaritzburg. The men’s team, the defending champions for three consecutive years were unable to secure a spot in the semi-finals. However, they performed exceptionally well against the hosts UKZN and TUKS by defeating both teams 6-1 and 2-1 respectively. Their counterparts, 2015 Varsity Hockey Champions, are in brilliant form. The women demolished Varsity College 13-1, TUKS 4-0 and MATIES 2-1 to secure their spot in the semi-finals which will also take place today.
The UJ Netball team has been giving their 100% best, and will take all that have learnt and go back to the drawing board in preparation for the upcoming Varsity Netball tournament. UJ Rugby entered three teams into this year’s tournament. UJ is proud to be hosting two out the three UJ Rugby teams in the finals tomorrow. The UJ Barbarians will fight for the title against the Walter Sisulu University at 10:30am at the Milopark UJ Rugby Stadium and the much anticipated UJ and TUKS final will take place at 12:30 at the UJ Rugby Stadium.
And last but not least, the UJ Squash team has been the defending champions of the USSA Squash tournament for the past four consecutive years. They are truly the team to beat. UJ A has been on fire, defeating the University of North West W 24-1, TUT 24-0 and Wits 24-0. UJ B equally matching UJ A’s results by conquering UCT 17-9 and University of Limpopo 24-0.
Let’s take it all the way to the top UJ!
