JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – 28 May 2025 – The University of Johannesburg (UJ) is celebrating a significant achievement as 17 of its exceptional athletes, coaches, and support staff have been named in Team South Africa for the upcoming FISU World University Games. This prestigious international student competition will take place in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany, from July 16 to 27, 2025, showcasing 18 sporting codes across 23 venues while celebrating sport, science, and culture.

Leading UJ’s strong contingent are basketball players Sbongakonke Mkhwanazi and Thabang Ndlovu, alongside 11 talented student-athletes from the UJ Athletics Club. The broader UJ representation includes three athletics coaches, a basketball team manager, and two key athlete support staff members, underscoring the depth of talent and expertise within the University’s sporting ecosystem.

“I am extremely honored and proud to represent Team South Africa as the Basketball Team Manager in Germany,” stated Elizabeth le Roux, UJ Basketball and Hockey Clubs Manager. “It is what we strive for in sport: to represent and have players and staff represent the country on the international stage. UJ showcases the abundance of talent we have as an institution across sporting codes and athlete support through such competitions, among other platforms. For the UJ support staff selected, their selection reflects that they are of international standard.”
Two other UJ Athletics student-athlete and club member will be jetting off to Nigeria to compete in the CAA Under-18/20 African Championships on 16-20 July 2025. Student-athlete Martha Nkosi will represent the University in the junior women’s U/20 high jump while club athlete Oluchi Ndubueze will compete in the women’s 100m sprint and long jump. The competition will take place in Abeokuta, Nigeria.
