The University of Johannesburg (UJ) has initiated a disciplinary process after five students organised and participated in an illegal demonstration, disrupting academic and administrative activities, and committing or enticing violent behaviour, at the University’s Doornfontein Campus on Tuesday 21 July 2015.

The students in question, have been immediately and temporarily suspended and the internal disciplinary processes commenced on Thursday, 06 August 2015.

The EFF Student Command applied at the local government authorities to conduct a march towards the University’s Auckland Park Campus, in solidarity with the suspended students. This application was denied by local authorities and participation in or the organisation of such a demonstration is prohibited.

UJ has the best interests of its students and staff at heart and unacceptable behaviour such as threats of intimidation and acts of victimisation will not be tolerated by the University. UJ takes incidents that compromise a safe learning and working environment seriously and does not hesitate to strictly apply its own disciplinary codes to deal with such incidents. The University has also sought the assistance of the SAPS to maintain order and discipline on its campuses. The University remains committed to engage with students on their concerns, and will only do so in an atmosphere of good order and discipline.​
