The University of Johannesburg (UJ) successfully hosted its Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) Extravaganza on 11–12 September 2025, marking yet another milestone in its journey of shaping future-ready graduates. The event comes as UJ celebrates 20 years since its historic 2005 merger, and it reflected the University’s renewed commitment to its values of Impact, Innovation, Inclusivity, and Integrity.

Over the two days, more than 3000 high school learners explored 38 groundbreaking projects and interactive showcases presented by UJ’s seven faculties, the College of Business and Economics and its Johannesburg Business School (JBS). From engaging with the robot dog SPOT, experiencing a 3D-printed wall, and stepping into a virtual reality courtroom, to exploring the University’s AI Hub and learning practical first aid, students experienced first-hand the innovative teaching, research, and learning that defines UJ. The STEAM Extravaganza forms part of the University’s continued commitment to shaping the future through technology, advancing societal impact and sustainability, and strengthening their global footprint and partnerships. It is designed as a vibrant celebration of innovation, creativity, and collaboration, igniting curiosity and inspiring the next generation to reimagine possibilities in an era defined by disruption and opportunity.
Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Letlhokwa Mpedi, said the STEAM Extravaganza would become an annual event, underscoring its importance in inspiring young people to pursue subjects that are critical for the future world of work.

“This initiative brought together all of UJ’s academic entities in a dynamic showcase designed to reignite passion for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. In an era of AI, future skills, and shifting career landscapes, STEAM education is essential for preparing the next generation of innovators and problem-solvers. The presence of the UJ Academy, our pioneering high school with a strong STEM focus, further highlighted our commitment to nurturing talent early,” Prof Mpedi said.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Academic, Professor Sehaam Khan, praised the faculties for their collaboration and creativity in curating the experience.
“The STEAM Extravaganza demonstrated the best of UJ, our academic excellence, our spirit of inclusivity, and our drive to create societal impact. We wanted learners to see that UJ is an institution built on integrity and innovation, and that they have a home here as the future leaders, scientists, artists, and entrepreneurs of tomorrow,” Prof Khan said.
The event also aligns strongly with UJ’s newly launched Strategic Plan 2035, which sets out a bold vision to position the University as a future-focused, globally recognised African institution. By placing emphasis on transdisciplinary research, innovation, digital transformation, and inclusive excellence, the Strategic Plan 2035 seeks to expand UJ’s impact both locally and internationally. The STEAM Extravaganza demonstrated this strategy in bringing together technology, creativity, and education to empower South Africa’s youth.
The vibrant showcases not only reinforced UJ’s standing as a leader in Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) but also reflected the University’s broader vision as it celebrates 20 years of transformation and excellence. By prioritising curiosity, creativity, and collaboration, the STEAM Extravaganza reaffirmed UJ’s role in shaping the future of education in South Africa and beyond.
