Professor Tshilidzi Marwala, the Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Johannesburg (UJ) shed some light on the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the market when he was interviewed for an episode of ‘CNN Marketplace Africa.’
Prof Marwala highlighted that the underlying technology of the fourth industrial revolution is AI and that South Africa should embrace this paradigm where physical and social phenomena are programmed to solve complex problems.
“We have the largest concentration of people with PhDs in AI and we are the leading centre for artificial intelligence in this continent,” he says.
The university has hired Professor Qing-Guo Wang from China to assist students in developing AI solutions.
Prof Marwala, who took to office of UJ’s Vice-Chancellor and Principal in the beginning of 2018, pointed out that the University is exploring ways to incorporate technology into business solutions for a new generation, as part of the University’s drive to further establish itself as a leading educational AI hub in Africa.
