The University of Johannesburg (UJ) Senior Men’s Football Team opened the season in high spirits after defeating former Premier Soccer League (PSL) and current Gauteng ABC Motsepe League log leaders Cosmos FC 1-0 on Saturday, 13 January 2024. Tokologo Vilakazi’s only goal in the first-half gave UJ the win after the students failed to convert seven clear goal-scoring opportunities throughout the game.
Coach Karabo Mogudi’s squad registered their first three points in the league this year. UJ will be looking to win a number of matches to move up to the top on the league table from their packed match schedule for the next three months.
Speedster Ntokozo Mathobela had three goal-scoring chances but was unable to convert in front of the goal. Speaking after the match, captain Maselesele Makoti said that the team had done well despite facing a tough opposition. “I think the boys played really well. We gave Cosmos a good shift. They [Cosmos] piled up pressure on us but we managed to score a goal and defend our 1-0 lead until the end of the match. I thank the squad for showing up and giving their all today. It’s a good start to the year,” said Maselesele.
The UJ Senior Men’s Football Team currently sits in position 12 after 14 games with 18 points. In their next upcoming fixtures, the Orange Army faces Highlands Park on 20 January (away), Tembisa Hollywood Thunder on 24 January (home), Dondol Stars FC on 27 January (home) and African All Stars FC on 31 January (away).
