State Capture, White Monopoly Capital and Radical Economic Transformation were central themes at a University of Johannesburg (UJ) seminar on Wednesday, 26 July 2017.
South Africa’s former Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan alongside his former Deputy Minister, Mcebisi Jonas, sketched some of the paradoxes and puzzles surrounding the concepts.
What is State Capture? Who is doing the capturing? How? What are the short and long-term consequences? How can it be challenged? Where does radical economic transformation fit into the equation? And what role can intellectuals play in this contest of social forces? These were some of the questions explored during the seminar.
The seminar was hosted by the University’s Departments of Politics and International Relations, Sociology, Anthropology and Development Studies.
