UJ scientists named in the world’s Top 2% list for 2024

Scientists from the University of Johannesburg (UJ) have been recognised among the World’s Top 2% of Scientists for 2024. This list, compiled by Elsevier and Stanford University using data from Scopus, highlights researchers making significant contributions in their respective fields.
Being named in the Top 2% signifies global recognition for research excellence and enhances a scientist’s reputation within academia and industry. This distinction can open doors to increased funding, collaborations, and speaking opportunities at international conferences. Additionally, the ranking provides visibility across diverse disciplines, showcasing work that may otherwise remain underappreciated.

Some of the scientists representing UJ’s Faculty of Science are:

The methodology used for this ranking includes a C-score, which factors in total citations, the h-index, and citations with and without self-citations. Scientists are evaluated across 22 fields and 176 subfields, with both career-long and single-year performance assessed.

Prof Annah Moteetee, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Science (UJ), pointed out the significance of this achievement:

“As the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Science, I am delighted to learn that several of our researchers in the Department of Chemical Sciences, including Distinguished Visiting Professors, are among the top 2% globally, as ranked by the Stanford-Elsevier citation database. This latest recognition highlights the world-class research at UJ and underlines our faculty members’ significant contributions to the global scientific community. Their impact not only elevates the reputation of our faculty but also strengthens our position as leaders in scientific advancement on the international stage. This achievement reflects the University’s steadfast commitment to excellence, innovation, and the pursuit of knowledge that addresses real-world challenges. It is a proud moment for the faculty and a significant milestone.”
