UJ runners to boost Team SA at 2024 FISU Cross Country World University Championship in Oman

The University of Johannesburg’s (UJ) long distance running maestros Phemelo Ntoe, Sibusiso Msibi, Themba Thingane, Lehlohonolo Lusiti and Sisanda Dumisa will represent Team South Africa at the 2024 FISU Cross Country World University Championship in Muscat, Oman.

The two-day showdown, scheduled for Saturday, 17 and Sunday, 18 February 2024, will feature sixteen student-athletes from five South African universities (UJ, University of Pretoria, Tshwane University of Technology, the University of Free State, and North West University Potchefstroom).

Team South Africa will compete in the 4km and 10km races for both males and females, with all the UJ student-athletes running in the 10km distances. Dumisa is the only female athlete from UJ competing in the championship in the 10km race.

Team SA departed on Wednesday, 14 February 2024.

UJ student-athletes are no stranger to international cross-country championships. In February 2023, UJ students Ryan Mphahlele, Jayde Rosslee, and  Msibi as well as alumnus Maxime Chaumeton represented South Africa in the World Athletics Cross Country Championships which took place in Bathurst, Australia on Saturday, 18 February.

Speaking on the performances of his student-athletes, UJ Athletics Club Manager, Roger Haitengi said, “The UJ students-athletes have competed in a number of cross-country championships over the past few years. With that, I believe that they have enough experience to challenge for top honours in Oman. The competition will be tough, but it is possible to get podium finishes.”

He added, “Due to the warm weather that side, I think that the athletes will do well because it’s not far different from the African climate.”

Three other UJ student-athletes, Tshegofatso Nwagu (male), Khunedi Mashishi (female), and Faith Mabena (female) were selected as non-travelling reserves for the Team SA squad.
