The University of Johannesburg (UJ) has been ranked in the 401-500 ranking bracket globally for Engineering & Technology according to the 2018 edition of the Times Higher Education (THE) Subject Rankings released on the 17th October 2017. This marks another milestone for UJ this year- debuting in yet another ranking system and adding to the growing list of UJ’s rankings accolades.
The Times Higher Education subject ranking previously only published the Top 100 universities for the Engineering & Technology subjects. This year (2018 edition), however, the subject ranking in Engineering & Technology has been expanded to include the Top 500 universities.
UJ’s Prof Saurabh Sinha, Executive Dean: Faculty of Engineering & the Built Environment said, “UJ has continuously strived towards a world-leading approach to engineering education, with the aim of producing quality, well-equipped graduates. In addition to academic impact, the research conducted by the faculty strives for socio-economic or societal impact. The University is extremely proud to be placed in this prestigious ranking for the first time and this serves as an affirmation of UJ’s strategic commitment to innovation, local relevance, and global competitiveness.”
The rankings are calculated using 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators linked to teaching, research, citations, international outlook and industry income to give a comprehensive and balanced comparison of universities across the world.
The narrower subjects used to create this subject ranking in Engineering & Technology are:
- Electrical and Electronic Engineering
- Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
- Civil Engineering
- Chemical Engineering
- General Engineering
Four other South African universities are also ranked, and all in the same 401-500 ranking group, namely: University of Cape Town, University of KwaZulu- Natal, Stellenbosch University and the University of the Witwatersrand.
The Times Higher Education World University Rankings are the only global performance tables that judge research-intensive universities across all their core missions: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.
