On Tuesday 19 November 2019 Times Higher Education (THE) released the results of the 2020 edition of the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject for the following subjects: Clinical, Pre-Clinical & Health; Life Sciences ; Physical Sciences; and Psychology.
The THE Subject Rankings methodology is based on the same range of 13 performance indicators, grouped into five categories (called ‘pillars’), used in the overall THE World University Rankings, but the methodological weightings attributed to each performance indicator is recalibrated for each subject to suit the individual subject fields.
Earlier in November 2019, seven UJ subjects were recognised in the Times Higher Education world university rankings.
Clinical, Pre-Clinical & Health
For the second year running in its third appearance, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) has been ranked among the Top 600 globally for the Clinical, Pre-Clinical & Health subject in this year’s 2020 THE Subject Rankings, consistently positioned worldwide within the 501-600 band, in the elite company of this year’s 775 ranked universities from across the globe (expanded from the 721 universities that were published last year). The Clinical, Pre-Clinical & Health Subject Ranking encompasses subject areas spanning medicine, dentistry, and all other health-related subjects (including nursing, optometry, radiology, nuclear medicine and medical imaging, rehabilitation, public health, environmental health, biomedical technology, podiatry, somatology, and complementary medicine), which reside within UJ’s Faculty of Health Sciences.
Life Sciences
The University of Johannesburg (UJ) has made its debut this year for the Life Sciences subject, ranked among the Top 500 globally, placed within the 401-500 band worldwide, in its first appearance in this year’s 2020 THE Subject Rankings. UJ joins the elite company of this year’s 821 ranked universities from across the globe (which has been expanded from the 751 universities that were published last year). The Life Sciences Subject Ranking encompasses subject areas spanning agriculture, forestry, biological sciences (including biochemistry, microbiology, biotechnology, botany, zoology), sport science, and veterinary science subjects, the majority of which are housed within UJ’s Faculty of Science.
Physical Sciences
For the second year running in its third appearance, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) has been ranked among the Top 500 globally for the Physical Sciences subject in this year’s 2020 THE Subject Rankings, consistently positioned worldwide within the 401-500 band, in the esteemed company of this year’s 1 054 ranked universities from across the globe (expanded from the 963 universities that were published last year). The Physical Sciences Subject Ranking encompasses subject areas spanning mathematics, statistics, physics, astronomy, chemistry, geology, geosciences, earth sciences, environmental sciences, and marine sciences subjects, which reside within UJ’s Faculty of Science.
Psychology
For the second consecutive year, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) has been ranked among the Top 400 globally for the Psychology subject in this year’s 2020 THE Subject Rankings, consistently placed worldwide within the 301-400 band, in the elite company of this year’s 494 ranked universities from across the globe (expanded from the 463 universities that were published last year). The Psychology Subject Ranking encompasses subjects relating to psychology fields (including general psychology, clinical psychology, counselling psychology, community psychology, neuropsychology, sport psychology, educational psychology, and animal psychology), most of which are housed within UJ’s Department of Psychology in the Faculty of Humanities.
