UJ professor joins IRBA board

Finance Minister, Pravin Gordhan, has appointed Professor Alex van der Watt, Head of the Department of Accountancy within the Faculty of Economic and Financial Sciences at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) as one of the Independent Regulatory Board for Auditors (IRBA) board members.​​

 

The eight-member board represent diverse areas of expertise and include academia, law, and accountancy.
Prof van der Watt, a recipient of the UJ’s Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Teacher Excellence Award for 2012, is a chartered accountant and holds a master’s degree in Financial Management.
He serves on several professional bodies. He is a member of the Initial Professional Development Committee of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA); a member of the Educational Committee of the Independent Regulatory Board of Auditors; a member of the Main Board of SAICA; Director of the Thuthuka Education Upliftment Fund and Trustee of the Thuthuka Bursary Fund.​
His teaching philosophy is one that is underpinned by certain fundamental human elements that enables him to connect with students in such a way that they become motivated to think critically and practically about subject matter.​
Under his leadership, the ​Department of Accountancy​maintained its position as a leader in generating candidate chartered accountants in the country, with excellent pass rates for several years. The Department of Accountancy’s programmes are recognised as being amongst the finest in the country in terms of content and delivery.
