Refilwe Maseko and Shannon Macomo scored two goals to hand the University of Johannesburg (UJ) the first victory in the 2023 Hollywoodbets Super League opening match. The Orange Army (UJ) went on a 3-points hunt in KwaZulu-Natal Province, emerging victorious against the Durban Ladies FC at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday, 4 February 2023.
The UJ senior men’s team also handed Shumba FC a heavy 12-1 defeat at the AW Muller Stadium in Johannesburg during in the Men’s Regional League on Saturday.
The two teams were eager to start the season on a high note, playing an open and an attacking football. “We prepared rigorously for this match. We worked very hard to improve how the team plays and built team cohesion. I’m happy with the performances I saw in the first match and I would like to see them playing even better in the upcoming games,” says elated Coach Nthabeleng Modiko, Head Coach: UJ Women’s Football team.
The team boasts several experienced players, including Kabelo Mokone and striker Refilwe Maseko, who bring experience and leadership to the squad. The team is also excited to welcome several promising young players.
Durban Ladies FC, on the other hand, are no strangers to success, having been crowned the winners of the SASOL League in the past.
UJ were also fresh from winning the 2022 University Sport South Africa (USSA) championship in Secunda, Mpumalanga, in December 2022, under Coach Modiko.
UJ relied mostly on speed and agility to put pressure on the Durban Ladies FC defence, while the hosts relied on their experience and technical ability to control the game. In their second encounter, UJ will host Coal City Wizards at the Soweto Stadium at 15h00 on Sunday, 12 February 2023.
The Hollywoodbets Super League is South Africa’s top flight women’s soccer league with the winning team competing in the CAF Women’s Champions League.
