Two talented Grade 11 learners from the University of Johannesburg (UJ)’s Metropolitan Academy, Zaahid Sader (17) and Nicholas Zhang (17), have earned an opportunity to compete at the renowned Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Los Angeles, California. Their innovative research project, Enhancing bobsleigh performance through biomimetic design inspired by the peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus) and kingfisher (Alcedo atthis), has secured them a spot among a group of six outstanding young scientists representing South Africa in the world’s largest pre-college Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) competition.
Following their performances at the Eskom Expo International Science Fair (ISF) in October 2023, Zaahid and Nicholas emerged as front runners to represent South Africa. Scheduled from May 11 to 17, 2024, this globally recognised competition will bring together more than 1,600 young scientists worldwide, offering them a platform to showcase their projects.
Zaahid and Nicholas’s research project is a testament to their passion for bobsledding and their commitment to pushing the boundaries of innovation. Drawing inspiration from nature, particularly the flight dynamics of the peregrine falcon and the streamlined shape of the kingfisher, they have designed two bobsleigh prototypes aimed at enhancing performance. Their analytical approach and the understanding of biomimicry have led to groundbreaking insights into bobsleigh aerodynamics, resulting in designs that outperform standard models.
UJ Metropolitan Academy, affiliated with the University of Johannesburg and co-sponsored by insurance company Metropolitan, has played a pivotal role in nurturing the talents of Zaahid and Nicholas. Established in 1992 by the former Rand Afrikaans University (RAU), the Academy provides a conducive environment for selected high-school learners from disadvantaged communities to excel in their studies and pursue higher education.
Zaahid and Nicholas’s achievements highlight UJ Metropolitan Academy’s dedication to academic excellence and innovation, showcasing the School’s commitment to preparing students for global success and highlighting the potential of South African youth in STEM fields through their selection for ISEF.
