The Faculty of Law at the University of Johannesburg proudly celebrates Mr Sabelo Khuzwayo, who graduates with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) during the Autumn graduation season. Khuzwayo, who serves as a Law Mentor within the Faculty, is already continuing his academic journey as he pursues a Master of Laws (LLM) in Commercial Law, specialising in Banking Law, Insurance Law and Tax Law.

Reflecting on this milestone, Khuzwayo expressed deep pride in being part of the UJ Law community.
“Knowing that I am graduating from the great University of Johannesburg, the second-best law faculty in the country, fills me with immense pride. I am honoured to be part of an institution and a faculty that drives positive changes in student life and instils both skill and passion in its students,” he said.
Having grown up in a small community where inequality was a persistent reality, Khuzwayo was motivated to pursue legal studies. “At the time I had limited knowledge but carried deep hope that law could serve as a powerful tool for meaningful societal change,” he explained.
His time at UJ broadened that perspective. Through the Faculty’s resources, supportive academic staff and learning environment, he developed a greater appreciation for the role of law in society.
“My aspirations have grown stronger, and I am now motivated not only to study the law but also to critically question it and contribute toward raising awareness of rights and advancing social justice,” he said.
Like many students, Khuzwayo encountered challenges along the way. However, his determination to succeed and the support of those around him kept him focused on his goal. “The thought of not making it, not being counted among the graduates of one of the best law faculties on the continent, kept me going. I could not bear the idea of disappointing those who have offered unwavering support to ensure that I succeed academically,” he reflected.
The support he received during his studies inspired him to develop a passion for helping others succeed, prompting him to become actively involved in student support initiatives within the Faculty.
“The support I received during my undergraduate studies, even in moments when I had lost hope of achieving excellent results, inspired me to assist others,” he explained.
Today, he serves as a Law Mentor within the Faculty of Law, supporting fellow tutors and guiding first-year students as they navigate the demands of their academic journeys.
Looking ahead, Khuzwayo plans to continue deepening his knowledge of the law through both further studies and practical experience.
“Because of what I have been taught, I now understand that the law is constantly evolving. For this reason, after completing my LLM, I intend to further my studies and gain practical experience in the law to which I have dedicated so much time and commitment,” he said.
He also offered words of encouragement to future UJ Law students.
“My advice to future UJ Law students is to use the opportunity of being in the midst of greatness wisely. At the same time, they must remember that it is their responsibility to uphold and preserve the high standards of the UJ Faculty of Law, so that future generations of students may continue to benefit from and take pride in the name UJ Faculty of Law.”
The Faculty of Law congratulates Mr Sabelo Khuzwayo on his achievement and wishes him continued success as he advances his legal studies and contributes to the development of the legal profession.
