On Friday, May 10, 2024, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) launched an anthology titled ‘Mama,’ paying tribute to mothers. The brainchild of UJ’s Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Letlhokwa Mpedi, ‘Mama’ explores a rich tapestry of themes, ranging from the trials and triumphs of motherhood to the pivotal role of educators as maternal figures.
The UJ Gallery at the University’s Auckland Park Kingsway Campus provided a befitting venue as UJ staff members gathered to commemorate the launch of this special publication. Prof Mpedi revealed that the idea of the book stemmed from what initially seemed like a whimsical idea – an endeavour to honour the paramount influence of mothers in people’s lives.
Comprising 27 chapters, ‘Mama’ presents a wide spectrum of narratives, authored by individuals from diverse backgrounds within the UJ community. The contributors, all within academic and support roles, represent various faculties and departments across the University.
Prof Mpedi shared nostalgic anecdotes from his childhood, highlighting the bond he shares with his mother. He urged attendees to cherish every fleeting moment spent with their mothers or maternal figures.
The keynote address was delivered by business doyenne and Chancellor of the Tshwane University of Technology, Dr Gloria Serobe. Drawing from her personal experiences as a daughter, mother, and daughter-in-law, Dr Serobe provided insights into the intricate dynamics of these relationships. In 2023, she authored a book titled “An Ode to My Mother-In-Law, Winnie Serobe: A Mentorship of Love and Honour,” chronicling her enduring relationship with her mother-in-law over 26 years. It was from these profound experiences that Dr Serobe drew inspiration for her keynote speech.
