The Department of Industrial Design, and Fashion Design from the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture (FADA) at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) saw students winning three different prizes at the opening event of the PPC Imaginarium Category Awards, on the 4th of February 2016.
Speaking to the calibre of education that leads to various students receiving awards, Senior Lecturer at the University’s Department of Industrial Design, Angus Campbell said, “This awards indicates that our programme is training industrial design practitioners to a level that is appreciated by South African industry experts.”
Every year the PPC Imaginarium Awards give emerging artists the chance to showcase their talent and creative thinking by using cement as their primary medium. Giving artists a platform to become recognized, by the artistic and business community.
The Awards cover six creative categories: Industrial Design, Jewellery Design, Film, Sculpture, Architecture and Fashion. The winners in each competition category were judged by a national judging panel which took place on 01 February 2016.
UJ Industrial Design alumnus, August de Wet, was selected as the Industrial Design category winner (winning R50 000) for his Concrete Light design. Current MTech Industrial Design student, Ivan Brown, was awarded as runner-up (winning R15 000) for his Concrete Beehive design, and Hester Erasmus, a third year Fashion Design student was selected as the winner of the Fashion category (winning R50 000).
UJ Fashion Design student, Erasmus category won of the Fashion category, her project is three outfits made out PPC cement.
“My collection is to raise awareness of saving water due to the drought we had and are still having. I did not use any water when mixing my cement,” said Erasmus, Fashion category winner.
De Wet said working hard from the beginning with a good idea would naturally make things fall into place. “Remember that an idea is not a design yet. The idea is there to guide and develop the design, but the design needs to speak for itself in the end without knowledge of the idea story.”The winner of the overall competition who will take home the grand prize of R100 000 will be announced at the Gala Evening at the UJ Gallery on the 3rd of March 2016. An exhibition of all the different categories will be on show at the UJ Gallery until the 28th of March 2016.
