UJ inaugurates new SRC leadership, emphasising student-centred governance

The official inauguration ceremony of the University of Johannesburg (UJ)’s Student Representative Council (SRC) took place on Friday, 21 February 2025. Delivering the keynote address, UJ Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Letlhokwa Mpedi, underscored the central role of students in the university’s existence.

“You represent the student voice. Fifty-four thousand students is a huge responsibility. Our student leadership is a critical partner in addressing ongoing sector-wide challenges such as student debt, accommodation, safety, and wellbeing—issues that are particularly pressing in the South African context,” he said.

He commended the SRC’s role in driving meaningful and lasting solutions for the student body.

The event, held at the Ubuntu Chambers on the Auckland Park Kingsway Campus (APK), was attended by members of UJ’s Management Executive Committee (MEC), including Professor Refilwe Phaswana-Mafuya, Professor Sehaam Khan (Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Academic), Mrs Nolwazi Mamorare (Chief Financial Officer),  Professor Bettine van Vuuren (UJ Registrar) and Professor Bongani Ngqulunga, Senior Executive Director: University Relations, Student Affairs, and UJ Sport. Also present were Dr Nell Ledwaba, Senior Director: Student Affairs, and Mr Andrew Munyai, Director: Student Life and Governance.

Professor Musawenkosi Saurombe, who served as Master of Ceremonies, encouraged the SRC to lay a strong foundation for future leaders.

Prof  Ngqulunga, expressed hope that the SRC members would go on to leadership roles in government and the private sector.

“This may be the first oath you take, but may it not be the last. In the coming years, we hope to see you in Parliament, provincial legislatures, and other leadership positions, taking an oath to protect the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa. UJ alumni should lead this country as politicians, CEOs, and judges. I am confident that our future is in great hands.”

SRC President, Sisekelo Simelane, reaffirmed the importance of service, integrity, and unity among representatives. He emphasised collaboration with university leadership to strengthen ties.

“Remember why you are here—to study and uphold your character. Unity is in our best interest. Have a bigger vision for yourself; this is just the beginning. In your service to students, uphold the university’s pillars: inclusivity, innovation, impact, and integrity. By the end of your term, people should know your name.”

Closing the ceremony, Prof Mpedi urged the SRC to embrace ambition and collective vision.

“The ability to dream, both individually and collectively, enables you as student leaders to envision a more just, inclusive, and equitable future within our institutions. We believe in the power of education—let us continue to dream together and turn those dreams into reality. This is how we reimagine the future.”
